Ken enlisted into the 47th Battalion, The Wide Bay Regiment, in 1961 at Maryborough. This unit became a subunit of ! RQR in 1962 and then D Coy of 9 RQR when the Pentropic Division system was abandoned in 1965.

He was promoted to Corporal in 1963, Sergeant in 1965 and then to Lieutenant in 1966. In 1974, he was promoted to Captain and posted to 31 RQR in Townsville.

In 1975, he moved to Brisbane and was posted to Support Coy 9 RQR as RSO. From then until 1979, he also had appointments as OC Admin Coy, and Asst OPSO.

In 1980 he was appointed OC 140 Sig Sqn upon being promoted to Major after completing a change of corps qualification at the School of Signals in Watsonia, Victoria.

He moved to Mackay in 1983 and was posted to 11 Training Group in Townsville as an instructor at Officer Training Wing. He returned to Brisbane in 1985 and was appointed as OC Training Coy at QUR until late 1986.

He moved to Toowoomba in 1986 and was appointed OC Admin Coy 25 RQR. In late 1987, he was appointed Battalion 2IC and continued to serve in this role until his retirement in March 1990.
